We have received some help from a fellow ebayer who offered some expertise in identifying this medal, so we have completely revised our description since this listing began. We have been told this is from the Kingdom of Bulgaria. It is a WW1 Royal Order of Saint Alexander, 6th Class, with swords representing the Military Division. It measures 1 3/4" long x 1 3/8" wide and is made of silver colored non-magnetic metal. The date 19 Feb 1878 is on one side. We are told the Royal Order of Saint Alexander was instituted in 1881, by Knyaz Alexander I and was the second highest Bulgarian order during the Kingdom of Bulgaria. It was awarded to both military and civilians, Bulgarians and foreigners, with the personal benevolence of the Bulgarian monarch, who was the Grand Master. The date date on the medalion is the independence date of Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire. The Order was abolished at the end of WW2 by the Communist regime.
This medal is pre-owned and has areas of wear and dings. We do not know the Russian language and do not know with certainty the history of this medal.
